Prior to the 12th of July celebrations in 1972, a youth on a motorcycle hurled an explosive into a downtown Belfast pub frequented by Catholics. Police said the blast wounded 65 persons, 3 seriously, at the Hercules Bar.

The 12th of July celebrations mark the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 when Protestant King William of Orange defeated the Roman Catholic forces of King James II, which established Protestant dominance over Catholics in Ireland.
